This is a copy of a small rant that I gave on Gaia Online today:


I was saddened by something that someone said to me in a different forum earlier today. I said I liked vampire movies, but that I didn't like Twilight, and she responded with something like "Oh, I'm so glad you're not a fan of vampires because of Twilight". It made me realize -- Vampires have become popular in the mainstream because of Twilight. Every little girl now listens to Hannah Montana and wears a "Team Edward" t-shirt. I, personally, never even think of Twilight as a vampire story... so I guess vampires are different now, in this current generation?

it was a teen film, about vamps, aimed at teens. of course it would make vamps seem cool. the way that interview did, i guess (although that was more grownip, and damnit, that vamp lestat IS cool) it annoys me that this happens. goth is like that. people like the lok, get into it for some reason, and then look like each other. they're not into it for expression or anything else, but because it's a fad, and im sure this vampire thing will be too for those who aren't genuine

I loved the South Park episode that made fun of Hot Topic. The traditional "goth" kids are all freaking out because everyone around them is turning into a "vampire". Suddenly it's cool to be a "vampire". I thought at first that it was an episode about Twilight, since it seemed to follow the same pattern.

And yeah, I'm officially against Interview with the Vampire, but Lestat is pretty cool. ;)

aw i love interview. i love the book as well. but it didn't make me vampire obsessed. i got that way in childhood :)
i always feared that, if a death movie was made (neil gaimon's death) all the emo kids would go dressed like that *sigh* it's so sad that people don't have their own style. im trying to get away from the goth look now, and go more medieval :) i want to be a princess!

Sometimes I make a point of performing in a high-cut three piece suit. Sometimes, its a brocade vest underneath because I feel like it. SOMETIMES, I even have sleeve garters to make people smile afterwards. I like stuff like that. Cool.
The recent "steampunk lite" style that has become trendy means I get a lot of nasty looks from kids who, when I ask, really just like the look / *insert Depp/Burton film here, etc.*
I am walking out of a performance of 19th century music, which I am already an MA-level expert on discussing. I get "the look" from teenagers who have no idea what 19th century art is outside of movies and architecture.

I remember one kid in high school that was saying "I'm a true goth because I know how to write in Runic". I asked him to show me, and it ends up he was writing in some made-up code thing (as in, this symbol is equivalent to A, this one is equivalent to B, etc.). Yeah, he's soooo goooooth...

I basically told him that he was insulting my ancestors, myself being of very recent Scandinavian ancestry (my Grandfather is from Norway).

I saw Twilight just recently, and was very disappointed. All of the hype that it's getting for that? The previews where bad, but the movie was ... no comment. I don't see it. &yes, it's only a fad, it'll fade.


onto other better news; July 15th! Harry Potter comes out! yay!
